Citizenship Applications

Overview

If you are a permanent resident and wish to become an Australian citizen, we can assist you in the process.

If you are unsure whether you are eligible to become an Australian citizen, it is in your best interests to seek advice on the eligibility criteria for citizenship from us before you proceed to lodge your application.

Who can apply for Citizenship?

You may be eligible for Citizenship if you are a:

  • migrant who has obtained permanent resident status
  • child of an Australian citizen or a former Australian citizen born inside or outside of Australia
  • former Australian citizen looking to resume citizenship

Citizen by Conferral

If you are a migration who has obtained a permanent resident visa, then you may be eligible for Citizenship by Conferral. You will be eligible for Australian citizenship if:

  • you are a holder of a current permanent resident visa
  • have lived in Australia on a valid visa for at least the last 4 years
  • have held a permanent residency visa for at least the last 12 months
  • have not spent more than 12 months outside of Australia in the last four years including not being outside of Australia for more than 90 days in the past 12 months
  • you are of ‘good character’
  • complete the Citizenship Test (if applicable)
  • not have any past issues relating to identity, character, risk factor or if you ceased to be an Australian Citizen in the past 12 months

The Process

Once eligibility has been established, the next step is to complete and lodge your citizenship application. This can be done onshore in Australia or overseas.

Once the Department of Immigration has received your citizenship application, a citizenship appointment will be scheduled. At the appointment, you will undergo identity verification and may be required to take the Australian Citizenship Test (if you are aged 18 to 60 and have mental capacity) or have a citizenship interview.

The Citizenship Test is designed to assess whether an applicant has adequate knowledge of Australia, including the responsibilities and privileges of Australian Citizenship. The test also determines the level of English that an applicant possesses. The Citizenship Test requires a pass mark of 75%.
